I caught up with BMX photographer Kyle Emery-Peck today through google talk. Click below to check it out.
In the Gnar: Okay, what are you up to now?
Kyle Emery Peck: Well today, I’m taking it easy. I woke up to hard rain and i txt’d my work to tell them I’m not coming in. I still gotta go at 630 for a meeting, but I think my boss is taking us out for beers to celebrate our 3rd store opening on Sunday.
ITG: Wanna do a few questions right now?
KEP: Yeah I’m ready, I’m folding laundry.
ITG: So I know you shot the Lotek in SF article, are you working on any other projects coming up? I know Fit is working on a new flick, are you gonna be involved in the photos at all? I know you occasionally shoot some ads.
KEP: Right now i’m just getting in tune with all the locals in the Bay. I’ve got some ideas in the works. Not really any large projects but probably some low profiles for Dig.
We got some rippers here. As far as Fit stuff, I ride with Jackson and Nick Sdot and shoot with them. I guess some Fit dudes from the east coast are coming here to ride for a few weeks but i think (Rob) Dolecki is coming as well. Maybe i’ll poach !! jk.
ITG: Cool. Yeah it seems like there are some rippers up there, Jake Honesto gets so sick man, I hope you’re working on one with him, I was talking to Sean (Ryan) the other day, how come you didn’t go to Costa Rica? I feel like it’s right up your alley?

KEP: I wish I could have gone on the Costa Rica trip man. I didn’t have the money to go and at the time i had my mind on 2 Hawaii trips that have now been postponed.
ITG: Yeah, Hawaii seems ridiculous. My friends went out there a couple years ago. I think they went at the wrong time because it rained all the time but they did get to ride Wallows.
KEP: I wanna hike the stairway to heaven at dawn. Haha.
ITG: Sick. Sounds awesome.
KEP: It’s this trail that Rob Jensen hiked up last year when he went with my flatland friends, Parker and Bottle.
ITG: Dialed, What are you doing to pay the bills right now?
KEP: I work as bike mechanic at a rental shop in Fisherman’s Wharf. I dial in hybrid mountain bikes all day and sometimes I go on rescue missions where they’ll have a flat tire on the the Golden Gate Bridge and I get to drive out there in a brand new Tacoma and give them a new bike.
ITG: Wow that sounds awesome. Have you ever thought of just concentrating on shooting photos for a living? People always ask me that and I think it would cool for a bit but having a low stress job is where I’m content, How do you feel?
KEP: Well, to be honest I think about it every day. It’s my dream to make a living from my passion. I think one day I’ll make it happen but it won’t happen overnight. I think having a job is really good for me. It keeps me on point, and motivated. It really makes me more productive when I have days off. I think one day I’ll get burnt on work and just try even harder at my photo stuff. Taking BMX photos isn’t exactly a lucrative occupation.

ITG: Yeah for sure. I feel the same way about being motivated with a job. How’s the weather in SF? You guys been finding some sick spots?
KEP: SF weather is pretty much the same all year. It’s awesome. We ride year round. The longest I’ve gone without going for a pedal is like 5 days. The spots are dope here too, always finding some new hip, or wallride. Yesterday I rode like 3 new spots.
ITG: Sounds amazing. SF seems like the jam, every time I visit I always wonder why I don’t live there.
KEP: Yeah man you’re tripping, come up and live here.
ITG: Haha we’ll see, Alright I’ll finish it up with an easy question, what have you been listening to lately?
KEP: I’m glad you asked that. I just downloaded the best Mars Volta lp Deloused in the Comotroium. It gets me so hyped to ride. I’ve been listening to a lot of classic 2 Pac and Nate Dogg. It’s never a bad time to listen to Pac. When I ride I also like listening to Acid King. That shit gets me jumping off of buildings.
ITG: Sick. yeah I used to hate on Pac but I’m kind of feeling it lately. Thanks Kyle, can’t wait to check out the new photos and hopefully you’ll send a couple more my way for Holeshot.
