Crazy?

That image is the bracket for the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro. Competitive surfing boggles my mind. I seriously don’t get it. That bracket looks insane and more akin to a final four bracket than something that basically amounts to this. I know that’s an extremely overblown exaggeration and other “action” sports are judged as well, but talk about some stress for someone competing in one of the “heats”. If you want to read more about it you can do so here but honestly, you’re better off just reading Svrf and Destroy. Now that I understand

HWA Fong Daddy

hwa_fong_lg

This is basically the bike I used to draw in my middle school notebook everyday, right down to the pedals. I’m no SPRFLS but I still wonder what the concept was? I’m assuming it must have been to just be different? Does anyone from New Jersey have any inside information on the Daddy? If you were from New England and were riding in the late nineties through the early 2000’s you probably remember the guy below shredding a Hwa Fong Daddy. Fall River stand up! Get some Hwa Fond Daddy pads here as well!

John Bristol

John Bristol seems to be what legends are made of. That term gets thrown around a lot but even though I don’t actually know the guy, it just seems fitting. Watch him shred a 540 at The Donald Pool and then check out the Portland part from the first Animal video below. It starts at the 4:00 minute mark but that doesn’t mean you should skip the beginning, it’s all awesome.

Nagasaki

In the LurkLife appreciation post from a few days ago, there’s a video of a skater named Pat Franklin with a Nagasaki graphic at the beginning of it. Being a savage nerd, I obviously had to find out more.

Vert Is Crazy

The title says it all. I watched some of the Dew Tour last night and I’m still floored by how high they go on vert. I know I sound like your drunk uncle talking about the extreme sports he watched at the bar the other night but I’m scared when I air out of a 7 foot ramp never mind a 13-foot Titanic or whatever they call them these days. There’s some good coverage of all the BMX festivities over on the Dig site courtesy of Kurt Hohberger as well as the on the ESPN site. The video above was courtesy of Ride BMX.

There’s one other small note I wanted to make about that video. The music the riders are listening to. Jimmy Walker, a Chicago resident, was listening to Kanye. Dennis McCoy seemed to be listening to Social Distortion, which if I can recall, he was listening to when I saw him ride at the Gravity Games in Rhode Island 10 years ago. Jay Eggleston was listening to Tom Petty. My question to you is, what song would you ride to?

Thank You Thrasher Magazine’s 20th Anniversary Issue

*TH10.coverpipe

In a time when I was skeptical on continuing to ride bikes and skateboards, this issue kept me on the right path. It was a time when outside sources were filling my head with what a responsible high school student should be doing. Thankfully I picked up this issue while my parents and I were Christmas shopping and the overflow of interviews was a good way to spend a week or two in the winter of 2001. If you can grab it try to, it’s filled with good interviews with photos. Maybe it will keep you on a path that’s right for you.
