One of my first connotations with the word “skateboarding” was the Tom Petty music video for Free Fallin’. I’m not entirely sure when I first saw it, wikipedia says it was a single in 1989 which would have made me 4 but I’m sure it was later than that. The skateboarding scene pretty much summed up skateboarding in California for me. Actually, I think it summed up California for me. The malls, palm trees, freeways, the vampires, looking back, Tom Petty did a good job, even the mini ramp session in the hills is still pretty awesome.
Yesterday I took a drive through Mulholland Drive into Laurel Canyon and when I stopped at a lookout I snapped that photo above and couldn’t get the images of the video out of my head. Watch the video below, if you’re my age, it might bring back some memories. It’s weird how much something can influence your opinion of something when you’re a kid.
